A study of the effects of colchicine on the immunology of mice bearing Lewis lung tumour.
Mice bearing a transplantable Lewis lung tumour were treated with colchicine. Colchicine at doses of 5.0 and 10.0 micrograms/mouse/day administered i.p. for 4 and 7 days or at doses of 25.0 and 50.0 micrograms/mouse/day for 10 days, impaired tumour growth while treatment for only 10 days produced a significant delay in tumour growth. Colchicine at the dose of 5.0 micrograms/mouse/day for 4 and 7 days or at doses of 10.0 and 25.0 micrograms/mouse/day for 10 days caused significant enhancement of the in vitro immune response as judged by macrophage migration inhibition tests and allogeneic antibody forming cell (AFC) responses. This observation was also confirmed by the decline in the in vivo tumour growth which was revealed with sequential measurements of the tumour growth in treated animals. The enhanced in vitro immune response by colchicine was associated with an increase in serum levels of IgM and IgG as measured by ELISA techniques. Furthermore, colchicine enhanced the in vitro chemotaxis of peritoneal macrophages and caused significant enhancement of the mean cell number of peritoneal exudate cells and increased the NK cell activity as estimated by the dye exclusion technique. The possible mode of interaction between colchicine and the immune system as regards enhancing the response to tumour challenge is discussed.

. Indeed, at the constant frequency, the anharmonicity is reduced to $\gamma\simeq 0.022$ Hz. Since this frequency is close to resonance with the second vibrational mode of the nano-diamond, we expect that the effects of the photon drag on the collective inelastic interaction will be strongly affected as reported in Fig. $fig:Fractional$ for the harmonic case.

The observed strong effect (experimentally observed as an $\epsilon=0.4$) is due to the frequency at which the photon drag manifests itself. It is possible to see that the increase of the interatomic distance results in a considerable increase of the dipole-dipole interaction, which, in turn, enhances the photon drag in the collective dipole oscillation, as observed in Fig. $fig:Fractional$.

Similar results are expected when the static electric field is applied along the principal axis of the nano-diamond instead of the the axis of rotational symmetry which is the case studied here. Such an electric field has been realized experimentally by placing a gold nanoparticle close to the surface of the diamond [@Fleischhauer1]. The effects of the electric field can be investigated by varying the strength of this applied field.\

Conclusions
===========

We have analyzed the characteristics of the inelastic dipolar interaction between two nano-diamonds suspended in a He bath. Our results show that the interaction coefficient is strongly dependent on the orientation of the nano-diamonds with respect to the applied static electric field. In addition, the photon drag exhibits a strong dependence on the orientation of the nano-diamonds. In particular, the motion of a nano-diamond along the polar axis of the electric field results in a strong enhancement of the dipolar interaction and the photon drag, while the motion of a nano-diamond along the principal axis of the electric field (which is the axis of the rotational symmetry of the system) does not affect the interaction coefficient.

These findings call for further analysis, since such an electric field can be used for the realization of a new family of controllable systems for quantum information processing [@DNP03; @Wolf; @Rabl]. The realization of a quantum network of such systems can be achieved using the combination of the strong coupling between the two ground states of the nano-diamonds with the properties of photon drag
