AutoCAD is a 2D vector-based CAD package, which means it uses lines and curves instead of 2D shapes for objects and data. With the user interface interface, the operator creates and manipulates objects that depict the geometry of a designed mechanical, electrical, architectural, or urban structure. The interface consists of a host of control panels, wizards and menus, each of which is accessed by clicking on icons displayed on the computer’s screen. Users can choose an object type (pipe, door, window, and so on), name the drawing, and assign it to a new drawing.

Each drawing also contains text, geometrical elements, dimensions, values, comments, labels, and other pieces of information that can be edited by the operator.

In the 1990s, AutoCAD became more popular with the introduction of the parametric, or model-driven, design approach. Model-driven design allows a user to create a component, such as a base, pedestal, or column, to design a building, and then create a model that describes its dimensions, such as the length, width, and height. The designer can manipulate the dimensions of the model, and the program displays alternative designs for each of the variable parameters. The parametric design can be used to increase accuracy by allowing designers to check that the results of the design are as expected.

AutoCAD is considered one of the most powerful and flexible CAD programs. It allows for the creation of 2D and 3D drawings, architectural and structural engineering, and GIS data.

AutoCAD originated in 1982, when a team of design engineers created a series of programs that produced some of the earliest computer-aided design (CAD) drawings on the Apple II computer. This set of programs was called “AcceDesign” and, after the team that created the programs was bought by a company called Scanning Systems Corp., it was renamed “AutoCAD” and was released for the Apple II and IBM PC/AT.

The first commercial AutoCAD release was released in December 1982. A PC version was released shortly after, allowing users to run AutoCAD on a desktop computer, rather than using a computer with an internal graphics display as in the Apple II version.

Since its introduction, AutoCAD has evolved into a sophisticated modeling, drafting, and presentation software package.

The Material tab is used for creating materials that are displayed in the viewport.
The Info tab displays information related to the current drawing such as model name, drawing name, project, date, and drawing group.
The DIMENSIONS tab is used to change the scaling of the drawing.

The Views tab contains the customizable viewports used to display and navigate a drawing. These can be configured to show or hide the ribbon, show certain layers and axes, display the status of various tools, and change the way the drawing is manipulated by the user. The default viewports are:
2D view (which shows an image of the drawing, a model space that contains the drawing and model elements of the drawing, and a design surface, on which drawings are placed)
3D view (which shows an image of the drawing, a solid model space that contains the model and model elements of the drawing, and the 3D viewports)
Dynamics View (which shows an image of the drawing, a wireframe model space that contains the model and model elements of the drawing, and a dynamic 3D wireframe view, which shows the dynamic model elements in real time)

The Properties tab allows the user to set properties and dimensions for the current drawing. These are:
Selection – to specify how the drawing is selected (the current viewpoint can be selected for a single line or block)
Label – to specify how text is displayed, the font, and the size, color and alignment
Dimension – to specify dimensions, set the data type, and allow for dimension symbols and dimensions to be displayed
Properties – to specify properties for the drawing, such as dimensions, layers, fill patterns, hatch and text styles, and others
Printing Options – to specify the margins and orientation of the printed page
Clip Options – to specify how the drawing is clipped when printed

The Tools tab is used to configure the tools that are available. The Tools tab is used to configure various views and tools available in the AutoCAD application. These tools include:
Modify – edit the model in the current viewport
Tools – show the toolbox, palettes, and user preferences

Ask HN: what should be in a logo – omnivore

I’m not good at graphic design and my girlfriend asked me to make her logo for a clothing company. I’ve been searching and searching and havent found an answer to this.
When I was playing around with Photoshop I tried a lot of different things and nothing feels right. They have a font for their name. Should I use that? If so how should I combine it with the name and the owl?
Should the logo have a single look, or do you think it should have a lot of different colors and textures?I am thinking about 3 things:
1. that the owl is a friend, and its happy because of the company, which makes people feel good (I know I feel good when I see the logo)
2. that the owl reminds you to be happy and doesnt feel threatened by others (also I feel good when I see this)
3. that the logo has a very gentle look like the little girl in the company has a nice and gentle look to it.Its been very hard to think about what to use. And I dont have any ideas about that either, which is why I am asking the HN community for help.
You’ll need to be thinking about them by market segment. For example:

* Clothing stores (women/men): should have a gentle look, a touch of cute, but nothing too garish or slutty.

* Logos for illustrators and designers: since your’re about to create the artwork it’s a good place to start.

* Logos for web design: are they having a website? Does the logo need to link to it? Does it need to work as a favicon?

* Logos for other businesses: Are they a software business? Banking? Finance? Law? A business that sells food? A manufacturer? Does it need to work as a sign or in an ad?

* Logo for startups: Does it need to have a sort of’startup look’, or will it only be seen at a certain stage of the business? Will they be using it on social media?

* Logos for non-profits: charities? Not-for-profit organisations? Are they promoting their organisation? Are they fundraising?

But how do you find out about this

What’s New in the?

Using Markup Assist, edit drawings from your desktop and save as AutoCAD blocks (with all comments, text, and dimensions), or export as DWG, PDF, or 3D models. (video: 1:55 min.)

Create customer-ready drawings quickly, with ease. The Markup Assistant creates professional-quality drawings with the best possible quality. (video: 1:55 min.)

The Add-On Application Programming Interface (API) improves performance and overall productivity. (video: 2:00 min.)

Intelligent Filters:

Stay focused and reduce the cognitive load of analyzing your drawings. New filters make it easier to find parts and remove unwanted geometry from your drawings.

Assign attributes to objects that you reuse, like paths, linetypes, and named blocks. Use your attributes when you search, sort, and filter your drawing. (video: 1:25 min.)

Automatically clean up your drawings by filtering out repetitive geometry and properties from your drawing. (video: 1:34 min.)

The new intelligent search allows you to search for geometry and property types based on the attributes assigned to a specific object. (video: 1:19 min.)

Comprehensive updates to spatial data

Memory Reference:

Jump straight to the drawing you want, from anywhere in the interface. With AutoCAD’s Memory Reference, you can jump to different drawings at any time.

Find the drawing quickly with the new jump stack. Create a stack of drawings with a single mouse click. (video: 1:33 min.)

The most frequent operations are easier to perform. With the redesigned toolbar, you can perform commands more quickly and easily. (video: 1:14 min.)

Enhanced Inkscape Integration:

Interact with Inkscape drawings directly from AutoCAD. Use line styles, colors, and effects directly in your drawings, and watch the transformation occur in real-time. (video: 1:38 min.)

With the new Inkscape integration, Inkscape drawings look and feel native to AutoCAD. You can work with the vector graphics tools you know and love. (video: 2:00 min.)

You can now use tools and commands with Inkscape files directly from the command line. This means you can open or save.svg files directly from the command line. (video
