AutoCAD is a professional CAD system for the modeling and drafting of 2D and 3D parts, assemblies and models, buildings, and landscapes. It is primarily used for architectural design. It can also be used to draw various mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and civil engineering items. There are four main types of drawings (or views) available in AutoCAD: Ortho, Profile, Local View and Section.

The most complex type of drawings are 3D polygonal models. These can be sliced in many ways, producing cross-sectional views of the object. These views can be viewed from different angles, and can be viewed from any viewport. Slices of the model are typically named with the type of view they display. To create polygonal views, the command line options “Polygon3d” or “Polyline3d” are used. The “Polygon3d” command creates a collection of 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 or 128 polygons, or polylines. A polyline is similar to a polygon, but can pass through more than one point. The “Polyline3d” command creates a polyline, which is the geometry that represents a path or curve. These commands are used by the “Polylines” and “Polygon” commands, but only “Polygon” creates solid geometry.

Some AutoCAD views can be displayed in 2D or 3D. The Ortho view is a 2D view that displays the model as if it were a piece of paper, with all the lines and polylines extending to infinity on all sides of the drawing. The lines and polylines do not cross or intersect each other in the Ortho view. The Profile view is a 2D view of a 3D object, displaying the object from the side or top. The Local View is a 2D view that displays the object using features common to the drawing environment, such as planes, angles, circles, points, lines, and arc segments. The “Polyline” and “Polygon” commands can be used in the Local view to create solid objects, but “Polyline” creates a polyline. The Section view is a 2D view of the 3D model, displaying the object as a horizontal cross-section, and allowing the user to work with the object like a 2D drawing. User interface

The user interface of AutoCAD and other AutoCAD-based applications is derived from Microsoft Windows. There are two key categories of features in AutoCAD: those that support the creation of drawings, and those that support the editing of existing drawings. The following diagrams illustrate how these features are used to create a drawing and an object.

The features in the top left of the diagram show how to create a simple linear object, by selecting it from the Tools menu and clicking on the Line tool. On the bottom left, the tool options are used to change the thickness of the line. On the bottom right, the tools are used to create the object.
