As of February 2020, AutoCAD is still the world’s leading commercial CAD software, with a significant share of the market. Although the years have not been kind to AutoCAD, it has undergone many modifications and is still a highly innovative product, with additions to its core functionality as well as the introduction of new features that have helped AutoCAD maintain its lead.
When it was released in 1982, AutoCAD was one of the first commercial CAD programs. It was a desktop application running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. Before AutoCAD, most CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal. The main advantage of AutoCAD was that it allowed the user to design as a team, drawing a set of drawings that would be sent to a printer via a network. This was a big advantage over the minicomputer-based CAD programs that would have to be managed by the company that ran the program (the owner of the mainframe computer, for example).
AutoCAD’s use of a graphical user interface (GUI) meant it could be used by an unskilled user. An AutoCAD user could not only design and share drawings, but could also work directly from the dialog boxes. AutoCAD also had a text user interface (TUI), which could be accessed from the command line with a command interpreter. This made AutoCAD suitable for users that didn’t have access to a graphics terminal.
Over the years, AutoCAD has undergone a number of changes. The first version was known as “1.0,” and was released in 1982. “AutoCAD LT” was the first of the “Lite” versions, released in 1993. In 1995, “AutoCAD 2000” (AutoCAD’s flagship release), followed. From 2000 until 2014, the flagship release was called AutoCAD. “AutoCAD LT 2015” was released in January 2015, followed by “AutoCAD LT 2018” in November 2016. AutoCAD is still one of the leading CAD programs.
AutoCAD in the 21st century
The transition from the version 2000 of AutoCAD (AutoCAD 2000) to the version 2019 of AutoCAD (AutoCAD 2019) has been a slow one. Over the past decade, AutoCAD has become more and more sophisticated and powerful

Interact with other software
AutoCAD has a rich API which allow software development tools and third-party applications to interact with the software.
AutoCAD has a lot of APIs for developers to use to enhance the experience of using AutoCAD. One of the more popular ones is AutoCAD Connect, which was introduced in AutoCAD 2010 and is a server-based technology which allows developers to use a “connect” web service to extend the functionality of AutoCAD without requiring AutoCAD to be installed on the user’s computer. The service allows multiple users to collaborate on documents simultaneously, creates new drawings from scratch and allows creating drawings with SketchUp and 3D Studio Max. The Connect service also allows developers to access live drawings in real-time as well as share/open/collaborate drawings through the web.
Drawing Interchange Format (DXF)
DXF is the standard file format for AutoCAD drawings. In addition, AutoCAD supports the Open Design Alliance Standard for Exchange (SDE), which is an XML-based standard file format. It is used by Acrobat, Microsoft Office, and the open-source FreeCAD.
AutoCAD is a CAD application which uses the Autodesk DWG format. In the early days of AutoCAD DWG files could only be viewed in AutoCAD but with the introduction of AutoCAD Viewer in AutoCAD LT (1992) and later AutoCAD 2008 (1999), it became possible to view DWG files in any supported viewer, as well as drawing creation and modification in other software. The first.DWG viewer was Autodesk DWG Viewer for AutoCAD; the first other non-AutoCAD product was Acrobat Reader for AutoCAD. The DWG format has remained largely unchanged since its inception, except for some minor changes introduced to facilitate the introduction of object-level data sharing.
In addition to the DWG format, AutoCAD supports other file formats used for AutoCAD-based drawings:
DXF is the standard file format for AutoCAD drawings, which is used for building and modeling.
XMDF is used for XREF data referencing.
STL is a file format used for Catia Modeling.
DGN is an older file format for CadQuery. CadQuery, and its successor CadQuery Xpress, were widely used in the graphics industry. CadQuery Xpress

What’s New in the AutoCAD?
Be more efficient with custom master data objects by copying the master data from another drawing. Save time by deleting controls from a drawing after all the information about them is copied to the new drawing. (video: 1:40 min.)
Set your drawing as read-only and then add edits using an existing drawing. You can also define your own “read only” status for any object. (video: 1:40 min.)
Drawing Area Enhancements:
Group and ungroup drawing items and then use a point as the reference point for a selection. You can also select regions, entire drawing units, or shapes. (video: 1:55 min.)
Add editable features on top of existing objects. This includes text boxes, dimension points, arc centers, and lines that are defined in a non-editable drawing. (video: 1:30 min.)
Civil 3D Enhancements:
Manage your drawing projects. Make use of project views, storage, and synchronization with Revit to simplify your project process. (video: 1:23 min.)
Faster building performance and lower latencies in your design. Use a larger and more powerful rendering engine to make your drawings better for everyone. You can also download and use the new BIM technology for additional design benefits. (video: 1:29 min.)
Create and maintain multiple projects simultaneously, choose project names, and work with existing drawings. Select an existing project to make changes or add additional drawings, or start a new project from an existing drawing. (video: 1:45 min.)
Use actions to apply a global action to multiple parts of your drawing, or to apply a more complex action to multiple parts. Create a rule-based action, add conditions, and choose different actions based on the results. (video: 1:32 min.)
Use a mask to remove elements from a drawing, or apply masking styles to your drawings. Use a mask to define the shape of a text box or even highlight a part of a drawing. (video: 1:22 min.)
Raster and Vector Graphics Enhancements:
Save time when you need to
